Freedom Gundam – 4ft papercraft

[ OVERVIEW ]

A 4 foot tall papercraft model of one of my all time favorite diecast models by Bandai of Japan, based on a popular anime movie. I created this paper model over the course of two months, which included building the miniature model, creating a 3D replica and constructing the final enlarged paper version. The final paper model consists of 175 letter sized sheets of paper and around 500 individual parts.

Okay….it’s a good thing you don’t have kids. Because you would never be able to assemble something like this without them destroying it. Awesome work man. Looks like it was a lot of fun.

  2. Pedro | December 12th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

    WOW….amazing !!!!!

  3. Soaring [Foobariu] | December 13th, 2008 at 6:44 am

Well, you are quite the Artist, aren’t you?!? The design looks well thought out, especially for one that will be used in paper format. I wish I had such fine skill. I’d like to know a few things.. do you design by drawing points, adding lines, and filling in faces? Or do you use primitives. Which program do you use? What kind of paper did you use? One last thing I’d like to say, such a big model like that is beautiful, but since it’s paper, it has its weaknesses. Sometime, I suggest getting some Krylon, or some clear sealent spray, so your model will keep its ink from running for the coming years.

    Keep it up!

  4. TLesko | December 13th, 2008 at 7:16 am

Thank you Soaring. I do all modeling in 3D Studio, polygon modeling from primitives. 65lb paper works best, but all depends on what I’m going for. Haven’t tried coating with a clear spray yet. Might be a good idea.

  5. keeia | December 16th, 2008 at 6:20 am

You design Freedom Gundam is extremely attractive, whether or not gives me a papercraft.Thanks.

  6. Ron | December 16th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Impressive work as always, any plans on releasing a pattern :)

  7. TLesko | December 16th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Thanks Ron. Probably no release with this one. But, if I get enough requests, I’ll release some new content for people to build in the near future.

  8. Jorge Andres | December 16th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Wooow! I’m impressed! Please, if you ever release this, let me know…. I already have my 175 sheets of paper waiting… :D

  9. Dil | December 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

  10. Getter1 | December 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

  11. GARRy | December 16th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Very sweet friend, now make a Big Daddy(Bioshock) papecraft that size with a pattern and you are my new god!

  12. acheo | December 16th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

    cool stuff dude…

but its kinda wasted cause u model it on a bandai 1/100 non scale mecha kit…

u should model it on a 1/100 Master Grade kit instead….

the proprotion will be must more nicer and accurate.

but still, this is one hell of work u got there!!!!!

i’m also doing my own ‘papercraft’ gundam myself, but i dont have the 3d model design printed out…it kinda of come out while i’m doing it..cause i’m a total idiot on 3d designing. i create it will looking at the actual mecha kit

u can visit my blog where i posted some images of my work as well…

  13. Sean | December 17th, 2008 at 6:43 am

Why not release this model?? Help others and they will pay you back in kind. At 175 pages, it’s not like everyone is going to make one…

I always thought the whole mantra of the papermodel community was to share and help each other out… Even the seriously cool Bumblebee model (http://paperinside.com/bumblebee/) was released for free!

  14. atochero | December 17th, 2008 at 9:19 am

Good job. I congratulate you, for your effort and your dedication to this fantastic model!
I imagine to build it in a smaller scale.
I will pay attention to release!!

  15. Travis | December 18th, 2008 at 12:25 am

it is a sight to beheld for all please send me a copy

  16. Matt | December 18th, 2008 at 8:29 am

Wow, seriously WOW! I think I just wet my pants…
It would be freakishly god like of you if you were to realease this in the near future.
Im sure the papermodel community would throw you a holiday or something fun like that!

  17. WC | December 18th, 2008 at 12:10 pm

I’m sad that you won’t release this one. That would be fun to assemble and would definitely be a great addition to my collection.

  18. yen | December 19th, 2008 at 9:48 am

    Please release!!
    Thank You!!!

  19. shinlenin | December 19th, 2008 at 11:25 am

wow! amazing papercraft..i want those patterns..hehe..great job!

  20. MMiguel_Brasil | December 19th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

    Amazing! Congrats from Brasil.
Hope you change your mind and release the patterns, we would build it in smaller scale.

  21. Chris3141 | December 20th, 2008 at 2:06 am

Incredible. I have found very few non-chiby gundam papercrafts but this is just astounding. I would love to build one my self but i can understand why you would wanna keep something like that to your self. Even if you don’t release it i have been inspired to design my own. Great work.

  22. DFLT | December 20th, 2008 at 6:53 am

Would you consider releasing the design to a very small group of otaku who are dying to build this? If there is anyway that something could be worked out, please let me know :]

  23. Vortex_4200 | December 29th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

I wish you would release this one… sure my wife would more than likely KILL me for building it, but it would fun!!!!!

  24. Dai | December 31st, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Amazing work, I’ve been working on designing and (successfully) constructing an 8-foot Gurren Lagann and a 7-foot Kanti (from FLCL) myself recently, and I know first-hand that it takes a lot of effort to get this stuff right.

I’m kinda disheartened by the fact you won’t be releasing plans for this gundam though, it truly is a beautiful sight that I’d like to translate to a more human-sized state, but there’s only so much one can do in a lifetime, right?

By the way, what program do you use for the papercraft unfolding portion, Pepakura? They came out with V3 a month ago, FYI, worth looking into whether or not it’s your editor of choice ;D

Can’t wait to see your next works!

  25. greg | January 6th, 2009 at 4:49 am

Dai I love FLCL. When you complete Lord Kanti I hope you make a video and post the files for fans to build one of thier own.

  26. Chris | January 11th, 2009 at 12:16 am

I love it! Too bad you won’t be releasing the plans for it, I would love ot make one only bigger.

  27. jessy | January 11th, 2009 at 12:22 am

  30. Sebastian | February 12th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

DUDE??¡¡¡, how in the world can a human being do that??¡¡¡, dude, you are AWSOME, are you sure NASA havent called you yet??, i mean, if with a printer and paper you can make a replica, imagine what you could do with nasa instruments….. YOU COULD BUILD A FRIKIN REAL GUNDAM¡¡, wait next to the phone…. NASA wont take to long to contact you.

  37. Shawn | March 19th, 2009 at 5:36 pm

Wow you finally finished it! I gotta say buddy, the finished product looks flippin’ sweet. If I even attempted to make something like that it’d look like a giant piece of origami that got caught in the middle of a elephant stampede.

  38. Sero | March 21st, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Very Nice. Would love to make one. Any chance of buying a copy of the plans?

  78. amateur | January 26th, 2010 at 4:46 am

This is so cool, the only things I have ever built are small papercraft, like 6in x 6in x 6in. I mostly built starcraft fuigures, but I so want to build this. If there is any way you could send the design I would love to try and build my own. Either way, Thanks for the cool pics/video.
