2011

OVERVIEW

After burning my 4FT Freedom Gundam papercraft in 2010 I was determined to create a bigger and better replacement. This 7FT Gundam Mk-2 papercraft became the result of my goal, made up of 1250 parts on 720 pages, for a total paper weight of 10lb (4.5kg).

Beyond The Paper

A behind the scenes look at the making of this project.

A behind the scenes look at the fantasy photography for this project.

I started at the head and worked my way down through the rest of the body parts.

Jetpack details.

Upper body and hip skirts assembled.

I built an inner skeleton out of foam board for additional support.

Feet being assembled.

Legs being assembled with several layers of parts on top of each other.

Gundam standing without arms attached. Keeping the upper back open until the end allowed me to make adjustments to its inner skeleton.

I’m usually very focused when working on one of these big projects, but whenever my younger brother shows up things get humorous and off task very quickly.

My lovely wife showing the Gundam some love.

Whatever I work at I do it with all my heart for God’s glory and for my personal fulfillment.

The source of my inspiration and guidance.

Christalin from my 65 Roses project got a chance to meet the 7FT Gundam. Her amazement was priceless.

I have built several perfect grade gundams… This has to be my next project!!!

  3. teruha

    感動した! I’m impressed!

The cross fits nicely, Was that an original part of the model, or was that customized in the design? One of the gundam models I put together has a similar cross design on the shield.

    • It’s something I came up with and added.

Awesome job dude! Any chance you could tell me what plotters you are using?

You should totally make Batman’s Tumbler! :D

      • Box

    Taras,
That’s a huge effort you put in there. Papercrafts I’ve done have taken months so this gundam would have taken ages. What weight paper do you use and do you print only on A4. you can have a look at my efforts on deviant art if your interested.

    • I used 110lb cardstock letter size paper, but that usually depends on the project. You’ve got some nice papercrafts as well.

I would suggest making 1:1 scale Gundam cockpit from 00 or maybe original RX-79 cockpit.

    • You know in Japan someone already made real 1:1 model which is real awesome. Google it ^_^b

      • Yes, but how many people did it take to make that happen?

You should get this marketed in mass and in co-operation with Gundam creators, you could make some coin off it!

Congratulations, you have an outstanding talent and I wish you lots of success and all the best. Gundam was my son’s absolute favorite when he was a teen. I have sent him a link to your site, which I am certain he will appreciate immensely. You have given life to this fictional character in an exceptional manner.

Congratulations, what a fantastic translation of a fictional character into a perfect life size figure. Perfect execution and clean work. My son loved the Gundam figurines when he was a teen, I have sent him a link to your site and I am sure he will appreciate it immensely. You have an outstanding talent and I wish you lots of success in pursuing your art form

    • Thank you for appreciating and sharing Carlos.

Seriously, with all of the interest, you should post this up on Kickstarter. I’m sure that you could get enough people together to make it worthwhile to get a commercial printer make up kits. You could keep control of the files and maybe even make a few bucks to pay for your time to create the next one :)

I would love to be able to build this as a father/son project. It would also make a really cool project for a church youth group.

If it’s something that you’d consider, but don’t have the time to pursue, let me know and I’d be happy to help.

    • Thanks, neat idea. I haven’t thought of using that service yet for something like this.

  22. Man these are my longtime Favortie Gundams and you just blew me away, After you showing how you build it. AWESOME JOB!!!!!!! Keep up more models to make.

  23. chris

this is an outstanding work of art you have made. ive always wished i had the talent to be able to do this myself. id have tons of these models. id like to give a shot on making a 4ft liger zero Jager. id like to make these instead of the plastic ones would save me lots of money

    • Hey Chris, you should try designing one yourself. There’s no reason why you wouldn’t be able to.

  24. Raymond

Is there a DIY section for this? I want to piss off my friends they brought the real Bandai 5 footer for $5000. I rather have this. Please give me your DIY if possible. Really Apprecitated

    • There’s a real 5ft Bandai model? I’d love to see it.

        • Raymond

But I think yours better. Very creative in terms of the outcome. Much props for your workmanship!

          • Raymond

I would LOVE to create yours and put it in my office! :o )

        • It’s a bit plain looking visually. I would assume Bandai would make something more interesting, especially for something that big.

          • Raymond

Yes after seeing your video and months of thinking and creating it. It’s a lot of work and you did an EXCELLENT JOB! Much praise for you!

          • Thank you Raymond for appreciating the effort.

  25. Ronin

Amazing work man. I’m definitely a fan now.

I will admit that I’m a bit sad that you’re not going to release the .pdo files. This would make for an awesome costume base. If you ever do, please let me know.

  26. David

How long did it take to make this project?

    • Around 350 hours for the papercraft and 1 year for the entire project, whenever I had the time for it.
